Item Details
Several British silversmiths have undertaken bottle holders/sleeves of varying sizes to grace dining tables since the Georgian period. We have also been told that in more recent times, it has been known for epicureans, restaurateurs and condiment manufacturers to commission similar items for promotional use.
Using this steer as a starting point, we have identified this particular sleeve/holder is totally compatible with the 100ml bottle of white truffle oil (as photographed) from the French company Plantin who were established in the 1930’s. Whilst we doubt they were the original customer for this sleeve, it is a delight to see something so beautiful put to such good use. The sleeve/holder does have two flat sides which could indicate another us, or alternatively that there may have been a succession of similar bottles that comprised a linear cruet or dining table assemblage?
