This charming dish bears the mark of Hung Chong & Co. placing it at; Shanghai, circa 1880-1925. The base in white metal, typically presents an exotic confection of dragon, fish and mystical creature like attributes, brought together and presented with all the aplomb of a talented and dedicated artist. The four segment tail is executed beautifully and provides a flourish to the underside of the shell. The circular base on which the sea waves sit, carries the linear rectangle containing the 'Hung Chong & Co' mark and is accompanied by a vertical array of oriental characters in a separate rectangular containment.

Condition is generally good with the Mother of Pearl having little damage except for a little surface scratching, a few small natural imperfections and a very small rim chip. The white metal button to the base of the bowl has light surface scratching. Elsewhere, the metalwork is in good condition with little discernible damage other than little surface scratching, some very small accumulations of dust, indicative of the items age and little unnecessary cleaning and a very slight 'rock' across the diameter of the circular base.
