Item Details
Here we have a beautifully executed flowing piece of Birmingham silver from 1910/11. We have attributed its primary purpose (in its current format) as being either a brooch or scarf pin, yet despite its quality and beauty it is difficult to be definitive. In summary, it most likely to have been commissioned privately and may have formed part of a larger piece of silver.
This theory is based on the fact that it only carries; a Lion Passant mark, the lower case 'l' of Birmingham in the 1910-11 period and a mysterious unboxed strike of '13'.
Assuming the foregoing theory is broadly right, it is possible that the larger silver piece was designed for either a wedding where after being worn by the bride on the wedding day, it was dis-assembled and given as individually numbered free-standing pieces of merit - either to female guests and/or the 'maids of honour'.
It has to be said that there are no obvious examples, that this was a custom that came to the UK. There are vague allusions it may have been practised amongst some of the "noble families" on the continent" during the 18th Century .
