Item Details
A heavy gauge silver buckle from the august Levi & Salaman workshops is distinguished by its simplicity and quality.
As with many of their simpler pieces, this buckle was sent to Chester for assay, confirming their belief in the quality they had imparted on even the most simple functional items.
Levi & Salaman were Birmingham based silversmiths founded in 1870 by Phineas Harris Levi and Joseph Wolff Salaman. They manufactured gilt costume jewellery and then progressed into more expensive silver jewellery.
Levi died in 1910 and the firm was converted to a limited company – Levi & Salaman Ltd with Joseph Wolff Salaman, Clive Joseph Levi (P. H. Levi’s son) and Lewis Henry Salaman listed as directors. The Potosi Silver Co was by then listed as a subsidiary.
