Item Details
This is a truly enormous silver mounted mirror from the 'master of frames & mirrors, Henry Matthews.
When we came across this behemoth it was crestfallen and unloved. The silver was black and coated in a proprietary silver polish to such a degree we weren't sure it was a pierced mount.
The easel back was handing off and structurally unsound. The velvet was bald and rotting with the silk disintegrating and the frame's structure in a dreadful state.
Today we are able to offer this mirror, complete with the bevel edged mirror in a good structural state, dressed in a lovely hand dyed velvet with a strong and stable easel stand to the rear.
As for the silver mount, yes it has a significant number of 'polished through' holes to accompany those in the pierced design.
However, we hope that, like us, you think this does not damage the aesthetic nor the practical use of the mirror and demonstrates the long history of the piece as it heads for its 125 year later this decade.
This mirror also has a feature we have only seen a couple of times before. Specifically it has completely a separate overlay header - cum - cartouche to the frames top rail, that could be engraved with a monogram if required.
All in all we think of this as the mirror to shame all other mirrors and hope that it finds a new home that will love it and the history it brings. If only it could speak...but then again, maybe not!
